Today, Alexandria is also the most western and cosmopolitan city of Egypt, so it won't be hard to visit its lively and commercial streets.
In the city you can visit the Lighthouse of Alexandria, built in the third century BC and destroyed by two earthquakes in the fourteenth century. For nearly two millennia it was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. With about 130 meters high, it was located on the island of Pharos. The other great asset of Alexandria was its library. Almost 1,000,000 documents were saved in there from the third century BC, and they disappeared with its mysterious destruction, another source for legends and speculations that give the city a mystic air . In 2003 they built a new library in which we can learn about all the ancient history of Alexandria.
