With 9.83 million km² and more than 316 million inhabitants, the United States of America is the third largest country in the world and a nation of astonishing natural, geological and cultural diversity. Let's see five places you can not miss:
1. Mendenhall Glacier Caverns in Alaska
In the state of Alaska we find the Mendenhall Glacier which occupies the amazing surface of 19 kilometres. It is a protected area for its natural interest and it belongs to the Tongass National Forest. This spectacle of nature has its greatest attraction "underground" since tourists can find paths covered by glacial ice in the inside.
2. Oneonta Canyon, Oregon
The Oneonta Gorge is the name given to a section of the Columbia River in the state of Oregon. The US Forest Service has designated Oneonta Gorge as a botanical area because of the plant diversity growing there. The place is immensely large, with a wild nature that will captivate you. You can rent a car in Portland to get there and make the trip on your own, as the roads are very good.
3. Skagit Valley’s Tulip Fields in Washington
In Washington State, during the annual Skagit Valley’s Tulip Festival in April, millions of tulips bloom and form rows and rows of colour that oppose the majestic North Cascade Range. Again, this place is very easy to reach from the capital city, where you can rent a car at Washington International Airport.
4. Hamilton Pool in Texas
It is called Hamilton Pool and it is located about 37 km west of Austin, travelling along Highway 37, so it will be very easy to get to. What surprises the most about this pool is its rounded shape, partly covered by a semi-spherical natural rock roof. From the top of this roof, a waterfall of about 15 metres height flows, which looks splendid after the rainy season.
5. Palouse Waterfall, Washington
The Palouse Falls have a height of 60 metres and they are in a canyon of awe-inspiring beauty. The waterfall starts 6 km upstream from the confluence with the Snake River, southeast of Washington, so it is easy to get to with a car.
