Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and those who visit it are enchanted by its music, history, trams and walks near the river. Another feature of Portugal is its gastronomy that specializes in defining an endless number of ways to cook the exquisite and famous cod.
Lisbon airport is located in the heart of the city. This peculiar feature of the city is very useful when renting a car, which will be ready and waiting for you when you arrive in Lisbon. You don't have to wait anymore to begin your adventure in the beautiful city that appears above the immense waters of the Atlantic.
What to visit in Lisbon? A must see for the traveller is the neighborhood of Belem, with two indispensable monuments. The Tower of Belem is included in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage and is characterized by its beautiful resemblance to a chess piece of oriental air. The second monument that we recommend as a must visit is the Monastery Dos Hermanos, which is also considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1983. It is a beautiful architectural work of the sixteenth century and an integral part of Portuguese culture and identity.
Another interesting place in the city is the impressive Lisbon Cathedral. It is the most outstanding monument of the Alfama which attracts the attention for its great resemblance to the Cathedral of Coimbra or the Plaza del Comercio. The cathedral turns out to be one of the most imposing stops in Lisbon for its architectural beauty and the history that surrounds it.
It should be noted that in the vicinity of the city there are many locations and fantastic places to take a day trip by car. Small towns, palaces, castles and, of course, beaches that make visiting Lisbon an adventure.
Sintra is the main excursion outside the centre of Lisbon. In this small city we can also visit nearby Cascais, Estoril or Cabo de Roca on a busy day. Nearby, in Queluz, there are fantastic palaces to visit such as the National Palace, the Portuguese version of Versailles.
Another of the closest and usual excursions for visitors to Lisbon is Mafra, where to discover an endless number of charming and lively places. We recommend the cuisine of this village, traditional and exquisite. If the weather is nice, we can bathe in some of the beaches located a few kilometres from the city of Lisbon. From the huge beaches of the Costa de Caparica, south of the river that crosses the city, to the popular beach of Carcavelos.
