Ok, SeaWorld is fabulous, you can’t deny it, but there is so much more to San Diego as a whole than just the one place. If you have never been you may be surprised to learn about everything you can do in San Diego. It is not as well-known as some of the other larger Californian cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco, which are both amazing in their own right, but there is something about San Diego that is very difficult to describe.
The city is very laid back, yes there is the hustle and bustle of day to day life, the roads are busy but not to extremes and there are always plenty of tourists in the city. Many of them decide to hire a car to see the sights. Car hire in San Diego is really reasonably and highly advised.
Anyone visiting the city really must spend sometime in the old town area. It is just amazing. The restaurants serve delicious food while old jazz and blues singers sit outside serenading the passing trade with their wonderful voice, and of course there is the opportunity to buy one of their CD’s, a unique souvenir if ever there was one.
The shopping in the old town is also great, there is a square of shops centred around a green and they sell pretty much everything. There is a candy shop that sells a wide variety of jelly beans, clothes stores and antiques too. There are plenty of gifts available so there is no excuse for not taking family and friends a little present back home with you.
The Seaport Village close to Downtown San Diego is a great place for shopping. There are a lot of great store located there, some are novelty stores such as one that sells a whole range of hot sauces and salsa. There is also a toy shop selling unique gift ideas for the younger members of the family. The tile shop is just fabulous. It sells a wide range of household tiles in a range of bright colours and sizes. There is a lot of Mexican influence in many of the styles, perhaps due to San Diego’s close proximity to the Mexican border.
If you fancy a day in Mexico car rental is a must. Jump in the car and take the short trip to the border. You will find yourself in Tijuana in no time. The town sells a lot of products for a great low price, but there are also many fakes and poor quality items too. Getting back into the US is not quite as easy as getting out. You must have all your paperwork with you including your passport. Queues can be horrendous with waits regularly for several hours. You may be lucky and get right through in minutes, it is not unheard of but it is something to take into account when you make your plans.
Bay cruises, ComiCon conventions and festivals will all keep you busy in San Diego and of course if you run out of ideas, there is always SeaWorld.
