We could divide tourist destinations into two types: those offering visitors a pure and unchanging environment for centuries, as it is the case of remote regions that have long remained isolated from other civilizations, and then there is another group, places that due to their location have created a mix of cultures that permeates everywhere. This is the case of Tarifa in southern Spain.
This is the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. A city of nearly 20,000 inhabitants that has the honour of being the closest European population to the African continent, which is only 14 miles away approximately . If we visit Tarifa our recommendation is renting a car at the airport of Jerez de la Frontera (120 kms) or at Malaga's airport (160 kms). From here both roads are comfortable and in very good condition.
But what could be the reason for travelling so many miles to Tarifa? We will give some reasons that you won't be able to refuse. First of all, it is a place full of history. Christian and Muslim soldiers alike have stepped on the streets of Tarifa throughout the Middle Ages. The reason is obvious, because of its proximity to Africa it was one of the first bastions to be conquered by the Muslim invasion and one of the last to be recovered by the Christian armies. That is why its Castle should be a must stop on our tour, where we will learn from people of the past as Guzmán el Bueno, Tarifa Abu Zara or Sancho IV.
Another reason to visit Tarifa is its beaches, the nearby beach of Bologna is by far one of the best beaches in Spain, a virgin, just urbanized coast where you can enjoy crystal clear waters and fine sand, or where you can visit a giant sand dune that borders it. Right here on this very beach we can stop to visit the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudia, in excellent condition.
Do you need more reasons? Sports and adventure. In Tarifa you can hire some of the many available courses to learn surfing. In fact the beaches are filled with surfers, and its streets are full of shops dedicated to this hobby. If you prefer a quieter adventure instead, do not hesitate to make a boat trip for whale watching in the Strait, thanks to this service we can see with our own eyes the whales and dolphins that inhabit this region of the oceans.
Undoubtedly, Tarifa is a good option if we want to meet little corners of the world full of excitement and life.
